Beneficiaries of the UNDP–Japan-supported North East Reset project, implemented by TPO Nigeria, recently visited the University Innovation Pod (UniPod) at the University of Maiduguri as part of an exposure and learning visit designed to connect vocational skills development with wider opportunities for innovation, entrepreneurship and economic recovery. Hosted within the University of Maiduguri, the UniPod is part of Nigeria’s growing national network of University Innovation Pods supported through a partnership involving the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Federal Government of Nigeria. The University of Maiduguri hub is specifically focused on Resilience and Recovery Innovation, reflecting the unique development and recovery needs of Northeast Nigeria.\r\n\r\nDuring the visit, beneficiaries had the opportunity to see the facilities and learn about the different ways technology, research, creativity and entrepreneurship can be used to develop practical solutions. The UniPod provides an environment designed to connect young people and innovators with tools, knowledge and opportunities to transform ideas into prototypes, products and potential businesses. UNDP describes the UniPod model as a platform that brings together talent, research, industry and entrepreneurship to help close the gap between knowledge and economic opportunity. For beneficiaries participating in vocational training under the North East Reset project, the visit offered a different perspective on the possibilities that can emerge from practical skills. Beneficiaries trained in areas including tailoring, leatherwork, barbing, cosmetology, carpentry, welding and ICT were able to explore an environment where traditional skills can intersect with technology, creativity and enterprise development.\r\n\r\nThe visit was more than a tour of a modern facility. It provided beneficiaries with an opportunity to think about what comes next after acquiring a skill: how to improve their products, introduce new ideas, use technology, identify opportunities and build livelihoods that can grow over time. For individuals who are already taking steps towards establishing or strengthening their businesses, exposure to innovation spaces such as the UniPod can help broaden their understanding of what is possible. The experience also reflects the wider objective of the UNDP–Japan-supported North East Reset intervention: supporting conflict-affected communities to rebuild livelihoods, strengthen resilience and create opportunities for sustainable economic recovery. As beneficiaries continue their journey from training to livelihood, visits like this reinforce the importance of skills, confidence, innovation and access to opportunity in building a more resilient future for individuals and communities across Northeast Nigeria.\r\n\r\nTPO Nigeria remains committed to supporting beneficiaries beyond the classroom by creating opportunities for learning, exposure and connection to wider pathways for economic empowerment.
